چکیده

A t-spanner of a weighted undirected graph G = (V,E), is a subgraph H such that dH(u, v) ≤ t · dG(u, v) for all u, v ∈ V . The sparseness of the spanner can be measured by its size (the number of edges) and weight (the sum of all edge weights), both being important measures of the spanner’s quality – in this work we focus on the latter. Specifically, it is shown that for any parameters k ≥ 1 and ε > 0, any weighted graph G on n vertices admits a (2k − 1) · (1 + ε)-stretch spanner of weight at most w(MST (G)) · Oε(kn/ log k), where w(MST (G)) is the weight of a minimum spanning tree of G. Our result is obtained via a novel analysis of the classic greedy algorithm, and improves previous work by a factor of O(log k).

Finding Light Spanners in Bounded Pathwidth Graphs

Given an edge-weighted graph G and > 0, a (1+ )-spanner is a spanning subgraph G′ whose shortest path distances approximate those of G within a factor of 1+ . For G from certain graph families (such as bounded genus graphs and apex graphs), we know that light spanners exist. That is, we can compute a (1+ )-spanner G′ with total edge weight at most a constant times the weight of a minimum spanni...

Light Spanners in Bounded Pathwidth Graphs

In approximation algorithm design, light spanners has applications in graph-metric problems such as metric TSP (the traveling salesman problem) [8] and others [3]. We have developed an efficient algorithm in [9] for light spanners in bounded pathwidth graphs, based on an intermediate data structure called monotone tree. In this paper, we extended the results to include bounded catwidth graphs.

Light spanners for bounded treewidth graphs imply light spanners for $H$-minor-free graphs

Grigni and Hung [10] conjectured that H-minor-free graphs have (1 + )-spanners that are light, that is, of weight g(|H|, ) times the weight of the minimum spanning tree for some function g. This conjecture implies the efficient polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) of the traveling salesperson problem in H-minor free graphs; that is, a PTAS whose running time is of the form 2f( )nO(1) for...

On Spanners and Lightweight Spanners of Geometric Graphs

We consider the problem of computing spanners of Euclidean and unit disk graphs embedded in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane. We are particularly interested in spanners that possess useful properties such as planarity, bounded degree, and/or light weight. Such spanners have been extensively studied in the area of computational geometry and have been used as the building block for constructin...

A Logic for Document Spanners

Document spanners are a formal framework for information extraction that was introduced by Fagin, Kimelfeld, Reiss, and Vansummeren (PODS 2013, JACM 2015). One of the central models in this framework are core spanners, which are based on regular expressions with variables that are then extended with an algebra. As shown by Freydenberger and Holldack (ICDT 2016), there is a connection between co...

Spanners, Weak Spanners, and Power Spanners for Wireless Networks

For , a -spanner is a subgraph of a complete Euclidean graph satisfying that between any two vertices there exists a path of weighted length at most times their geometric distance. Based on this property to approximate a complete weighted graph, sparse spanners have found many applications, e.g., in FPTAS, geometric searching, and radio networks. In a weak -spanner, this path may be arbitrary l...
